Mike Phillips, founder of Vlingo Inc., a speech recognition start-up, has seen the phone - but neither company would say whether they're working with Google. Paul Ferri, a founder of the Waltham venture capital firm Matrix Partners, has seen it, as has Murali Aravamudan, founder of a start-up called Veveo that is building a video search engine especially for phones. "We'd love to support a Google phone, if and when it becomes available," Aravamudan says, adding that there isn't yet a deal in the works.

Rumors multiply of 'Google Phone' launch

NEW YORK (AFP) — Specialized blogs are all abuzz this week with rumors that Internet giant Google will soon launch the "Google Phone" or "GPhone," a cheap mobile phone equipped with a Google operating system.
High-tech product specialist Engadget said a Google announcement would come next week, adding that a Google operating system would be tailor-made for the new cell phone.
According to another blog, CrunchGear, "Google is currently assessing over twenty (of Taiwan's) HTC models" and plans to launch its cell phone between January amd March of 2008.
Photographs of Google's touch-screen handset are already on the Internet, and according to Rizzn.com, it will cost a mere 100 dollars.
CrunchGear said the HTC/Google phone would have Google Talk enabled, allowing users to make free Internet phone calls.
The blog said the Google phone will not only be able to surf the net but also will include "a special version of Google Maps, compatible with built-in GPS, and compatibility with Gmail," Google's email service.

The emergence of a patent filing has stoked speculation that Google is working on a mobile phone-based payments service dubbed “Gpay” that could be rolled out by the internet search giant with a new phone handset.
Speculation hit fever pitch last week over the possible shape of Google’s next foray into telecoms as a host of blogs carried pictures of what was claimed to be a low-cost, internet enabled handset – the “Gphone”.
The fresh patent, which was filed last year by Google but has only just been published, describes how a text message from a mobile phone could trigger a “computer-implemented method of effectuating an electronic on-line payment”.

Google may jump into mobile phone game
Google Inc., owner of the most-popular Internet search engine, may introduce software to run mobile phones within the next eight weeks to promote its e-mail and mapping services, an analyst said.
The operating system would allow the company to partner with a mobile-phone manufacturer, Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster wrote in a report today. He said he isn't expecting Google to build a handset or create a Google-branded phone.
"There has been increasing chatter surrounding the launch of a Google phone, dubbed the 'Gphone,"' the Minneapolis-based analyst wrote. He has an "outperform" rating on the stock. "We believe the rumors are partially true."
