After months of speculation, an HTC "insider" has confirmed that the company is indeed working on the Google Phone.
Whatever design makes the final grade, it'll come with a custom version of Google Maps (GPS), Google Talk (integrated WiFi), Gmail and Google Calendar. There are probably more Google features and gadgets in there too. We're hoping for an announcement in two weeks, with an actual product launch likely taking place in Q1 2008.

So kompliziert formulierte die BBC, was in bestimmten Internet- und realen Kreisen als Tatsache gilt: Der Web-Gigant entwirft eine Familie von „GPhones“, die Googles mobile Dienste wie Suche, E-Mails und Landkarten besser aufbereiten als die handelsüblichen Handys. Natürlich auch besser als das iPhone von Apple, denn dieses ist das Feindbild der Googlianer, und nicht die Produkte von Microsoft.

Why Google is Building a Phone
On the Internet Yahoo and Microsoft are playing second fiddles to Google when it comes to search and ad revenue. But when it comes to mobile phones Yahoo and Microsoft are way ahead of Google.
For years Yahoo has been making steady in roads into the mobile marketplace. Most recently Yahoo's OneSearch mobile search engine replaced Google to become browser maker Opera's mobile browser search provider.
As for Microsoft, this year nearly 20 million mobile devices will ship with a version of Microsoft software on them, according to estimates from Yankee Group. Microsoft is even mulling the possibility of creating its own mobile phone based on the Windows Mobile OS.
With all Google's competitors muscling into the mobile space it's no wonder Google is feeling inadequate when it comes to the mobile space.

Rumors multiply of 'Google Phone' launch

NEW YORK (AFP) — Specialized blogs are all abuzz this week with rumors that Internet giant Google will soon launch the "Google Phone" or "GPhone," a cheap mobile phone equipped with a Google operating system.
High-tech product specialist Engadget said a Google announcement would come next week, adding that a Google operating system would be tailor-made for the new cell phone.
According to another blog, CrunchGear, "Google is currently assessing over twenty (of Taiwan's) HTC models" and plans to launch its cell phone between January amd March of 2008.
Photographs of Google's touch-screen handset are already on the Internet, and according to Rizzn.com, it will cost a mere 100 dollars.
CrunchGear said the HTC/Google phone would have Google Talk enabled, allowing users to make free Internet phone calls.
The blog said the Google phone will not only be able to surf the net but also will include "a special version of Google Maps, compatible with built-in GPS, and compatibility with Gmail," Google's email service.

Google may jump into mobile phone game
Google Inc., owner of the most-popular Internet search engine, may introduce software to run mobile phones within the next eight weeks to promote its e-mail and mapping services, an analyst said.
The operating system would allow the company to partner with a mobile-phone manufacturer, Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster wrote in a report today. He said he isn't expecting Google to build a handset or create a Google-branded phone.
"There has been increasing chatter surrounding the launch of a Google phone, dubbed the 'Gphone,"' the Minneapolis-based analyst wrote. He has an "outperform" rating on the stock. "We believe the rumors are partially true."

"The N-Gage service combined with powerful devices, world class titles and brands, and interactive social networking features, takes the mobile gaming experience beyond traditional boundaries."

Long-standing rumors about Google Phone
Long-standing rumors that Google will follow Apple with a mobile device of its own are heating up this week. On Monday, blogger Mark Hopkins posted that a Google employee confirmed to him that the company is indeed developing a cell phone.

Hopkins' source, whom Hopkins said is an "implicitly" trustworthy insider, told him, "the Google (applications) Suite is going to play a huge role in the usability of the GPhone, and the thought process behind it's (sic) functionality is less about beating the iPhone and more about beating the $100 Laptop."

More phones in the lurking?
Communication is the core. Any product around it is big money. Deep pockets, a skilled design team and a “killer app” and perhaps a phone is not all that a bad idea. Consider this, there was another rumor rife at the Leipzig Games Convention that Sony Ericsson was planning a PlayStation based phone (PocketGamer) somewhere down the line.
With online advertising as the mainstay of its success, Google has a lot of options to play with to determining the price of the Gphone. Many feel that it will cost lesser than the iPhone, with perhaps similar features.
What often intrigues me is how the traditional mobile phone heavy weights are not at the center of these innovation flux. Did they never see these coming, a whole industry becoming a fundamental base for add on apps? As for a user, its indeed a rollicking time to own a phone. So with the limited speculation that is out there, would a GPhone interest you?

Various ‘very trustworthy’ sources have confirmed a Google mobile device platform, or OS, to be revealed in the near future. The new Google offering, christened by various blogs as the ‘Gphone OS’, is expected to hit handhelds in 1Q 2008, if not earlier.

Google Using OpenMoko For gPhone?
There has been a new batch of rumors swirling about Google producing a "gPhone" mobile telephone after a Reuters reporter stated High Tech Computer Corp would be designing the Linux phone for Google. A friendly penguin has told us at Phoronix that Google is looking to team up with OpenMoko for their "gPhone". Google will not be using the FIC Neo1973 GTA01, but they will be bringing the open-source OpenMoko platform to their own hardware, which looks to be manufactured through HTC, and making a few changes along the way.

Der finnische Handymarktführer Nokia hat am heute in London seine neuen Online-Dienste für Mobiltelefon-Games und Musik vorgestellt. Auch neue Oberklasse-Telefone will das Unternehmen im vierten Quartal auf den Markt bringen.Der neue Spieledienst N-Gage wird weltweit im November online gehen. Der Dienst wird es erlauben, Testversionen der angebotenen Spiele kostenlos herunterzuladen und auszuprobieren.
Auch die Spezialanwendung für N-Gage wird kostenlos zum Download von der Website des Dienstes bereitstehen. Die Software ist mit Nokias Mobiltelefonen der N-Serie und S60 3rd Edition kompatibel.

Google against Nokia
Nokia's biggest competitor in the future may be Google. If Nokia doesn't offer value added services and software on its phones, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft will. In a world of shrinking margins on handset hardware sales, finding every valuable cent per user per ad or selling services for monthyl revenue is incredibly important. Where is Motorola in all of this?
